A dance for romance
Often considered to be the most passionate of all dance forms, the Tango is characterized by dramatic and provocative turns and shifts of the dancers’ head and torso, accompanied by staccato-like step arrangements that produce a captivating effect. Its two most popular and widely practiced styles, Argentinian, and Ballroom tango, are distinguished by the unique positioning and proximity of the dancers’ bodies and style of embrace that require close communication and synchronization of movement.
The origins of the tango: from Argentina to Montreal
The earliest form of the Tango was believed to have originated in Africa and the West Indies before making its way to the dance floors of Argentina in South America. This exotic dance was received enthusiastically by North American audiences through its introduction by 1920’s film stars like Rudolph Valentino which began its long history and ongoing popularity that continues to this day.
